100 cyclists powered Godiva on her journey.
The 100 strong Godiva Awakes Cycling Team was made up of novice and experienced cyclists, led by British Cycling Champion Mick Ives, who trained together preparing for Godiva’s extraordinary journey in 2012.
The team participated in regular training sessions supported by Ricoh Arena and Coventry Sports Trust. Ricoh Arena are provided access to their facilities and Coventry Sports Trust provided free access to Health and Fitness Clubs on training days plus fitness instructors to lead the spinning classes and provide fitness assessments for team members.
The Godiva Awakes Cycle Team cycled in groups of 25 as they powered Godiva on her journey in 2012 seeking sanctuary along the route at Rugby, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Luton, Hatfield, and Waltham Abbey before arriving in London to take part in the London 2012 celebrations.
Meet the team
Cycle team members were recruited at Coventry’s Festival of Cycling in June 2010, through a public ballot and from cycling clubs across the region. The final team were put through their paces at fitness sessions led by Mick Ives in November 2010 ahead of confirmation of their place in January 2011.
The Cycle Team was led by British Cycling Champion Mick Ives, with support from route planner Ian Lole from Nortfoft and representatives from NP Aerospace who created the extraordinary Cyclopedia.
Imagineer Productions worked with Ricoh Arena in Coventry and Coventry Sports Trust, which provides a wide range of sport, leisure and health programmes and activities across venues in Coventry, to deliver the joint training sessions for the Godiva Awakes Cycle Team.
